Connecting with your Inner Narrator

Connecting with your Inner Narrator is an imaginative way to notice and interact with automatic thoughts that cause distress. These thoughts are generated by our subconscious mind based on our past experiences and conditioning. The most important aspect to working with your Inner Narrator is recognizing that you don’t have to believe that voice!

One way to connect with your Inner Narrator is by imagining that you’re sitting in a dark movie theater. The large screen in front represents your mind. Imagine all your mental activity projected like a movie onto this screen. Imagine that the Inner Narrator is like the hidden producer of what you see on the screen.

There is no right or wrong way to do this practice. You are simply trying to notice the flow of your mental energy. You can use this practice to observe your mental energy in the moment, or you can focus on the mental aspects of a particular issue you’d like to explore.

  • What’s happening on the screen? What are you thinking about?
  • Who are the characters on screen? What’s happening?
  • Do you hear any words in yours or someone else’s voice?
  • What images do you see?
  • What associations does your mind make?
  • What is the emotional tone of whatever is there?
  • How does your body feel as you watch?
  • What is your Inner Narrator trying to show you or persuade you to do?
  • Where does your Inner Narrator need your help?
