COME HOME TO YOURSELF
How you feel physically, emotionally, and mentally is directly related to your nervous system state. Evolved from the animal kingdom millions of years ago, our ancient nervous systems are ideally suited for short-term, physical survival threats. They are ill-equipped to manage the mental and emotional threats we face in the modern world.
Learning about how the nervous system works was game changing for me. Instead of feeling like my chronic fear was a character flaw, I discovered ways my dysregulated nervous system had been running my life on autopilot for a very long time. I discovered that childhood subconscious fears and traumas had shaped my adult nervous system responses. Unfortunately, learning the science behind nervous system states didn’t make the dysregulation any better.
When you live with a dysregulated nervous system, you may may experience chronic states of stress, overwhelm, anger, fear, worry, and/or depression. You may have a hard time coping with and/or recovering from the events of the day. Dysregulation can feel like you are lost and unable to get back “home” where you feel safe, relaxed, and energized.
You are not alone. The human nervous system evolved to handle physical survival threats, and it easily becomes overwhelmed by modern emotional and mental threats. Neuroscience offers powerful information about how our autonomic nervous system works, but it can’t tell us how to use this information to improve our lives.
Improving our life experience requires cultivating awareness and making nurturing adjustments to our physical, emotional, and mental energy. We must also adjust our connections to nature, other people, and the all-that-is. By nurturing your nervous system in these ways, you are cultivating neural pathways that lead to feeling at home with yourself. It’s like walking to the center of your own labyrinth….
